Subject: BIG trouble with new software!
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
Hi all,
I just downloaded all the new GUS system software last night
and installed it. Here's the good:
-Intallation program was good.
-Patches sound better (except for too much vibrato) in most
cases.
Now, THE BAD:
-SBOS. Sheesh, am I having problems. I had the 1.4 beta and it
worked OK, but this new version 2 has a similair problem. It
takes anywhere from 50 seconds to 2 minutes to load! This is
unlivable. Why does it do this? Is there some interrupt
conflict? My hard drive light just stays on.
Also, the new version 2 DOES NOT WORK WELL! I tried my boot
disk with X-wing, which uses EMM386 to give me 1024 KB of
expanded memory for digitized sound/full graphics. This does
not work with SBOS 2.*. If I specify anything but NOEMS as
an EMM386 parameter, I get NO SOUND AT ALL from SBOS. If I
go with NOEMS, I get "FM" music and sound but no digitized
sound. Why doesn't this work with EMM386?
I also found that unless the ULTRINIT statement in CONFIG.SYS
is the first thing in the file, I get nothing with SBOS.
-Windows.
My system crashes. Here are some figures:
*using Patch Manager crashes in 5 minutes
*Winjammer " " 3.5 minutes
*using no MIDI devices seems O.K.
Anytime I use anything that uses MIDI, Windows kicks me out.
Sometimes it goes back to the DOS prompt, sometimes it gives
"EMM386 Exception error #06 - press enter to reboot."
This is a MAJOR PROBLEM!!!!!
Also, after following the install program and specifying
the Windows software to be installed, it removed the
driver for my Music Quest PC MIDI Interface card. I took
out the Ultrasound MIDI Port driver and re-added the Music
Quest driver, but now MIDI IN in Winjammer does nothing.
This is another MAJOR PROBLEM!!!!!
A little about my setup:
Using values 220,11,1,1,5. Tried 7 as MIDI/SB IRQ, but it
didn't work either. The MIDI card is 330 and DMA 7.
I have set the Windows driver to both conserver memory and
full sound. Both crash Windows. What else do I need to worry
about - disk cache, EMM386 settings, etc.?
I was really excited and thought maybe this would be it. :-(

Heya, folks.
I've been getting some complaints from seriously pissed off
companies who have been bombarded by email. The flood of GUS related
mail to these software companies has served only to make them less
interested in supporting the card.
(My apology at having accidentally added their address to the
mailing list during the rebuild was, in their words, "the nicest
letter received from an Ultrasound user". So our "PR" for the card
hasn't been the greatest.)
One of the problems is that publicly known email addresses to
companies generally are to the tech support groups. These groups have
little or no influence on corporate decisions concerning the GUS, but
their annoyance at our email flood does get spread around the
respective companies.
Please stop emailing the companies. A well written business
letter *on paper* to the companies is worth a lot more.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
There were a lot of requests to be on the GUS - OS/2 mailing
list... I think I've handled them all, now.
I've also set up a request server for anyone else who wants to
add. Here's the help file from the server:
======================================================================
List of commands for the GUS/OS-2 request server:
-------------------------------------------------
subscribe
Adds you to the mailing list.
unsubscribe
Removes you from the list. (WARNING! You must remove
yourself from the list by sending mail from the same machine you sent
mail from to add to the list. In other words, if you sent your
'subscribe' command from cadehp15.eng.utah.edu, you have to send your
'unsubscribe' command from the same machine. Don't ask why, just
trust me.)
Remember to put your request on the SUBJECT line of your
message to the server. If you don't, you'll just keep getting this
help file.
Addresses for the GUS/OS-2 list:
--------------------------------
gus-os2%itchy@dsd.es.com
General line. All people on the list will receive anything
you mail to this address.
gus-os2-request%itchy@dsd.es.com

your mail ("Subject: subscribe"), you can get this server to do things
for you. Send "help" to the server to see what it can do.
gus-os2-owner%itchy@dsd.es.com
If the request server doesn't work, or there's a problem with
the mailing list and you need to talk to a human, mail here.

Someone mentioned in the digest that I just read that they heard some 3d
stuff was meant to come with the new system disks on EPAS, but didn't
find any. I hope someone replies to that in the next digest (or has already replied to it in the digest this is appearing in...)
As an additional question, I would like to know if there are *ANY* 3d demos
out there we could have a listen to? Maybe someone was lucky enough to
pick something up from an exhibition somewhere?
If I've read right, you don't need any new hardware, and I'm sure most of
you, like me, would love to check out this 3d effect first hand.
if there's anyone out there who HAS heard any GRAVIS 3D stuff, could they
post a review of some sort?
Catch ya....

Subject: Gus install glitch?
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
1) Installed the new GUS drivers on a empty system. That is, I removed
all the old files.
Install worked _very_ slick, but left a weird directory on my c:
drive called ISFYZQVO.TJW, In this directory is a file called
SWAFILE.HDR that is 18,800 bytes long. The file contains (mostly)
a list of names of the new files.
Not serious, but unnerving to see a directory called ISFYZQVO.TJW on
your carefully guarded drive. Also, at no time did I ask the setup
to use drive C:? Why was it touched? The swapfile should have been
left on the drive I asked the ultrasound drivers to be on.
2) SBOS 2.0x does not seem to work for me with a 2 of the 4 programs
I tried, which was a big surprise. The Incredible Machine simply
hangs, with no title screen, nothing.
X-Wing runs, but has a huge delay at the start, and then just
plays with no sound at all. ALT-V shows that X-Wing is using
no sound driver. Both of these programs worked well under previous
SBOS. (Of course X-wing had a couple of problems with slow-down
in combat with lasers and tie-fighter screams)
Links, previously a trouble-spot for emulation, works fine.
3) My list of .PAT's has only 188 files, not 192. Also, my
ULTRASND.INI is missing an entry for #84. And a number of
.MID files have trouble loading patch #48. I realize it is a
large one, but with 700 K free or so, memory should not be the
problem should it? I assume that 2-256K segments are empty
when the GUS has 700 K free. Patch 48 should be able to slip
in there.
4) My SETGUS.LOG reports 3 or 4 unsuccessful installations approx.
2 weeks ago. This doesn't harm anything, but again, will confuse
a novice user.
5) You might want to make the 16bit patch loading Option more obvious.
The auto-Windows device setup (neat!, especially for beginners)
works so fast that I only stumbled on this option accidentally
by thumbing thru the .INI files.
NOTE: To people reading this on GUS Digest - you can set this
option manually in the .INI file, or change it under the
ControlPanel-Drivers-UltraWave&MidiSynth-Setup-Hi-Fidelity
Mine defaulted to 8 bit (probably good for 256K cards) but the
best sound comes when 16 bit is turned on.
On the above list, the only serious problem is the SBOS. The other
things are just points you should probably have ironed out before you
do a mass disk duplication. After that, this card is ready for the
big time! Setup and use have reached the point that a novice should
be able to handle it from here on. Congratulations!

Subject: is this the FINAL patch/package update from Gravis?
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
G'day all,
Living in Australia has its advantages, but it also has its down side, namely
that things take AGES to get out here sometimes (eg. GUS can only be bought
from one store, and they're still using 1.21 and the ORIGINAL SBOS.).
Therefore the net is the only way to keep up with current affairs.
WAKE UP!! :) Right, here's the question, is this new patch set/windows driver/
playmidi/SBOS/win driver package the FINAL release? Is it exactly the same
as what is going to be sent out to everyone through snail mail?
Do we get anything extra in the mail, apart from printed docs?
Just wanted to check.
In the mean time, I can't wait to get the new patches from epas and
try them out tomorrow!
Cheers,
Keith

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
I've had no problems recording in Stereo (8-bit, 22Khz or 44Khz) in
Windows with drivers on epas. I haven't tried recording with the
new drivers, but I'd assume that they wouldn't have went _down_ a
step.
Anyway, the new disks/patches/setup/etc are great! Only one problem
I've encountered. I think I must've left my old patches on the
drive when I installed the new ones, because now when I do a "dir
*.pat", I hate 204 files. Also, the old patches aren't in tune with
the new patches (not even close). Atleast I hope that's the
problem. I have a midi file that has a section with an instrument
way out of tune. (It's not even funny).
As for the MT-32 patch cfg file, I'll try to get a new one going,
but it's finals week. When I did the first one, though, I put in
the actual MT-32 instrument names on commented lines, so you can
actually go in and edit for "best fit".

Both of the speakers are unpowered. They are not sheilded either.
They are ideally used with a good amplifier. I think that 20watts
or more should be sufficient. If you want you could use the built
in amp in the GUS but in that case you may as well buy cheaper
speakers. These two speakers have been widely praised by
audiophiles. They have very decent bass. In one review of the
PSB Alpha the review said that anyone that listened to his pair
insisted on knowing where he had hidden the subwoofer!
I don't know of any place that sells them mail-order, but if you
tell me where you are located then I could ask around to see
who carrys them.

Well, I seem to be getting somewhere...
I seem to have enough of an understanding of EPS instrument files to break
them into header, layers, pitch tables, wave headers, wave data, FX header,
and FX data (although being a CLassic owner, I have no clue what's up with
the FX part).
I have also successfully converted EPS wave data to GUS raw wave data.
The EPS uses signed data in Motorola format, and the GUS uses unsigned (not
signed... I forget who said so) data in Intel format.
I have some info on the .PAT file format for the GUS, but haven't had time
to tinker yet.
What seems useful at this point? Should I work on a GUI for a sample editor?
Conversions back and forth between EPS and GUS?

The joystick port on my Multi I/O card is hardwired in at port $200. I
can't change or disable it. I would expect you have the same kind of
setup. It was a real pain when I got a Gravis Gamepad because it wants
port $201. Of course the GUS took care of that.

I had one last night that didn't play either. It seemed to play becuase
it was silent for a few minutes and then started a new song. But someone was

Just unzip the disks and then they'll fit. I think gus0018 was one that
wouldn't fit. After unzipping it, it fit on the disk (with 0 bytes free.)

Like a sharing violation error with my ramdrive. I don't even know what
it was doing since I was going from b: to c:, but Windows must have used
the ramdrive on it's own. Other than leaving a working directory on my
harddrive however, everything looked fine. I was quite impressed that it
finished setting up Windows, and did it correctly after getting an error.

Subject: wavpat05 works... sort of
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
Ok, earlier versions of wavpat didn't seem to work, but this latest release
is actually giving me something to hear. However, the results are not quite
what I would expect...
I've been using prec (pocket recorder) to record at 22.1khz, and have been
wary to keep the samples under the 32k limit... however, when I go to wavpat
to convert the sample, it'll play it back at a slightly higher or lower
frequency than the one I recorded at... i.e., maybe 23000hz, maybe 21000hz...
It doesn't give very consistent results for different patches. This really
annoys me, because there is no other way I know of to record patches for use
in midi music writing for the Gravis. In addition to this different note
playback bug, it also likes to put in a very noticeable (both visually and
audibly) POP at the very beginning of the sample th, under WHAM (another
waveform modification program), is not there.
Has anyone else encountered this strange anomaly(sp)? I've only tried
recording a few different instruments (being played by themselves) off of
several of my CD's, and have yet to get a .pat file I could use to reproduce
the same note I sampled. The .wav file I make is quiet clearly correct when
I listen to it and the original... the .pat sample, played back using the
wavpat program, and in kbmidi, is clearly not.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone having the same/similar experiences, and
possible suggestions (maybe something I overlooked?)
And if there is any other way of making .pat files for use with the Ultrasound,
please let me know about those too...

that isn't the best one for it, I can always grab any of the others on
epas.. Thanx..
